NEW Psychological Disorders – Here’s your Sign!

It seems our society is no longer satisfied unless we can successfully sort everyone, ourselves included, into neat little boxes. But what if we don’t fit? What if we are a square peg in a round hole?

Are these idiosyncrasies not just a part of who we are as individual people? Some of the newer “disorders” bring up a whole new risk of tempting healthy people to take dangerous medications to control what is a natural part of their personality which causes no harm to them or to anyone else.

The newest revision of the psychology handbook the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, or DSM-5, is filled with conditions you’ve likely heard of before, such as depression or bi-polar disorder, but a few conditions that might be added in the new edition may be less commonly understood.

Experts are now reviewing the new version of the book, due to be published in May 2013, and determining which new category of diagnosis to include.

“To make the cut, a condition should have a unique set of symptoms and a verifiable medical cause”, said Dr. Theodore Stern, director of psychiatric consultation at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Stern is not involved in editing or revising this edition or those past.

Here are some conditions under consideration for inclusion in the new edition. (While the first few I have little to argue with as you hit the bottom of the list you may be surprised.)

1. Hoarding Disorder – People with this condition have persistent difficulty parting with possessions, regardless of their value. They accumulate a large number of possessions that fill up living areas of their home or workplace until these areas can’t be used.
2. Learning Disorder – There is currently no category for a general learning disorder. It would include those unable to reach the same learning potential of others in their age group.
3. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Preschool Children – A separate categorization for PTSD for young kids who have been through traumatic events very early in life.
4. Binge Eating Disorder – Much the same as Bulimia, only the food is retained.
5. Hypersexual Disorder – symptoms of hypersexual disorder include spending excessive time on sexual fantasies or behavior, and experiencing excessive sexual behavior or thoughts in response to stressful life events. Further, for a person who has the condition, attempts to control the behavior are unsuccessful, and he or she usually engages in this behavior despite potential harm to themselves or others. *Interesting to note, homosexuality was finally cut from the last version.
6. Orthorxia Nervosa – is a term used to describe an obsession with healthy eating. When studied subjects preferred to not eat rather than to eat food they consider “impure” and harmful to their health.
7. ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) includes anyone who disagrees with authority. Estimated rates of ODD in the general population range as high as 16%, depending on the sample (American Psychiatric Association, 2000), with an average of 6 to 10% in different samples. I’m quite sure that number is now on the rise! *All of those skeptical about vaccinations, for example are about to be diagnosed with this.
8. Antisocial Personality Disorder – Now people aren’t just anti social they are “suffering” from a disorder and medication is suggested. When it’s being suggested that a significant percentage of the population is mentally imbalanced can you really blame them for becoming anti social?
9. Temper Dysregulation Disorder with Dysphoria – This used to be called a normal child having a normal temper tantrum.

It’s not difficult to come up with your own disease category…. Natural News has made it even easier just go to:

While this generator is funny and a highly amusing spoof, the fact that it’s so close to the truth isn’t funny at all.

There needs to be a disorder given to the diagnosticians and administrators who feel the need to compulsively update this crazy manual with newer bigger better faster sillier more outlandish disorders and ways to make the population believe that they have lost their minds in an attempt to create more revenue streams for the pharmaceutical companies. Maybe Obsessive Compulsive Judgmental Disorder (OCJD) would be appropriate. It has a nice ring to it. I’ll have to write in and see if I can get it on the new to be considered list.

If you exhibit a behavior in your life that is so extreme that it is indeed causing a problem for you, or your loved ones, I am in no way belittling that. But in making a disorder out of every activity we as humans participate in, it waters down the legitimacy of the people who really could use some support.

There are several herbal supplements that assist in mood regulation and balance of hormones in the body and brain. Before considering dangerous medications with lists of side effects twenty miles long please take a look at and consider the less expensive, safe, natural alternatives. – St. John’s Wort, CoQ10, 5htp, Sam-E and DHEA for example.
